Parents today face a challenge they never encountered in their youth: monitoring teen social media usage. While social media offers opportunities for connection and learning, excessive use can negatively impact brain development and overall health.
Over 93% of American teens use platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat regularly. While these can provide valuable connections and support, especially for marginalized groups, they also pose risks such as exposure to harmful content, increased anxiety, depression, and disrupted sleep and exercise routines.
The US Surgeon General and American Psychological Association recommend parental monitoring, especially for younger teens aged 10-14. However, balancing this with respecting your teen's privacy is crucial. More significant oversight is necessary if signs of problematic social media use appear.
By implementing these strategies, parents can help their teens navigate social media safely and healthily.
